A new play by Alison Mann
Directed by Kelly Somes
18 August-5 September 2010
at La Mama

www.lamama.com.au

Alison Mann’s work is “robust, lusty…emotionally risky and…genuinely moving” (The Age)

A woman, Margarite, visits a club and sees a stripper that is a mirror image of herself. She
wonders if this is the daughter she adopted out as a teenager. A journey through the psyche of
a woman in search of a child she once lost.

La Mama presents the first full length play by emerging talent Alison Mann (Winner Melbourne Dramatists’ Playwrights’ Award 2008). This bold production is an intimate, visual and visceral theatrical experience for thirty audience members. Tackling social and sexual taboos, this production immerses its audience within the seductive and confronting world of a strip club as it acknowledges the sometimes stark reality of the adoption
experience for birth mothers. Whilst the play is not autobiographical, Alison draws on her own experiences as an adopted person and delves into a subject which is often surrounded by silence and misunderstanding.
Supported by VANISH (Victorian Adoption Network for Information and Self Help).

The award winning team behind She’s Not Performing:

Hot on the heels of her Melbourne (La Mama) and Canberra (Canberra Theatre Centre) sell out seasons of Lloyd Beckmann, Beekeeper, director Kelly Somes leads an accomplished team of collaborators on this risky new work. Set designer, Tanja Beer (Melbourne International Arts Festival), lighting designers, Darren Kowacki (Malthouse) and Lisa Mibus (Melbourne Theatre Company) and costume designer Melanie Liertz (Ballarat Arts Academy) team together to construct the theatrical atmosphere of raunch culture. Visual theatre designer, Gina Moss (VCA Puppetry graduate) captures the imagination and turmoil of Margarite’s inner world
with puppetry and Jared Lewis’ (Living Room Theatre) dynamic sound design pulses with relentless energy.
Featuring a cast who are already making waves on our Melbourne stages and screens; Christopher Bunworth (Underbelly), Andrea Close (Canberra Critics’ Circle Award Winner), Mike McEvoy (Melbourne Playback Theatre) and Rachel Purchase (graduate SITI Company (New York)). Supported by dance choreographer Tamara Searle (The Australian Ballet) and performance consultant Rinkse Ginsberg (John Bolton Theatre School). Well known actor and theatre maker Maude Davey (The Burlesque Hour, Summer Heights High) lends
her dramaturgical talents to guide this new theatrical voice onto the Melbourne stage. The premiere of this new Australian play at La Mama is not to be missed!

“Director Kelly Somes…guides the production with sensitive, consummate skill. She weaves personal anecdote with audience interaction and skilfully timed moments of theatrical surprise with a casual ease And flawless sense of the moment” (THE CANBERRA TIMES)

ADOPTION APOLOGY

Association of Relinquishing Mothers (Vic) Inc. (ARMS)
Telephone: (03) 9769 0232
www.armsvic.org.au

To show your support for birth families and the children they lost to adoption you can:

1. Contact Ms Lisa Neville, Minister for Mental Health,
Community Services and Senior Victorians on 9096 7500
or email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ,au

2. Contact your local Member of Parliament. The name,
electoral office, telephone number and email address of
your local Member can be found at
www.parliament.vic.gov.au

Please tell the Minster and your local Member that you support the call for:

•    Changes to the Victorian Adoption Act-1984 to allow equal access to identifying information for birth families. While Victoria was the first State to provide adoptees with access to their original identity it is one of the last states to allow birth families access to identifying information about the children they lost to adoption.

•    An apology from the Victorian Government, hospitals and religious institutions involved in past adoptions practices that resulted in young unsupported women being denied the right to care for the children they had borne.  Systematic breaches of legislation and coercive practices to remove babies from their mothers have been well documented and there is a need to publicly acknowledge the pain and anguish associated with the loss experienced by these women and their children.

•    The Victorian Government to provide funding for professional counselling for anyone with an adoption experience to help them deal with the life-long effects of separation. (State governments in NSW, SA, WA and QLD have provided this support in recognition of the trauma associated with the separation of mother and child - recognised by many as a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS PDF Print E-mail

You are invited to participate in a historical study of the experiences of single women who gave birth at the Royal Women’s Hospital between 1945 and 1975. The study aims to discover what it meant to be a single expectant mother at this time and explore these women’s ability to choose whether they kept their babies or adopted them out. Ultimately, this study seeks to answer the question: “what role was played by the Royal Women’s hospital in these women’s experiences.”

This is in an oral history project and you are invited to share your experiences and memories. Christin Quirk will conduct all the interviews which will offer an opportunity to share stories and reflect on your past experiences.

The themes to be explored are not intended to cause discomfort in any way, although it is recognised that recalling life-events associated with placing a child for adoption may be distressing for some participants.

Your participation is entirely voluntary and would involve a (60-90 minute) interview on a date that suits you between April and December 2010. In some cases a follow-up interview (60-90 minutes) may be requested. The interview will take place at a mutually agreeable location. To assist in the accurate transmission of stories and ideas, the interview will be recorded. You will have an opportunity to edit your transcript and you may also request an audio copy of the interview for your personal archive, if you wish. Please note that if you become distressed at any time during the initial or follow-up interview, we will stop the discussion and counselling referral will be provided.

The stories you share in the interview will form an important part of the student’s Master of Philosophy thesis. On a larger scale they will contribute to a better understanding of the history of adoption in Australia. The research findings will be shared with the Royal Women’s Hospital and will also be published: a copy of the thesis will be lodged in the ACU national library in Melbourne.

You are, of course, free to refuse consent altogether without having to justify that decision, or to withdraw consent and discontinue participation in the study at any time without giving a reason.

You may choose to use your own name in this study or, if you prefer, to use a name of your choosing in order to protect your identity. All data files will be securely stored at Australian Catholic University for five years after which time they will be destroyed.

Any questions regarding this project should be directed to Professor Shurlee Swain and the Student Researcher, Christin Quirk: (email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or;
